Black History Month may be over this year, but we know Black History is endless! I got into fashion, seduced by the idea of making fine objects for the history makers of our era. Case in point; Halima Aden, the first hijab wearing contestant in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant (especially interesting given Minnesota’s large East African immigrant community). Since being signed to IMG in 2017, she has covered Allure, and the British and Arabian editions of Vogue, all the while in a hijab, refusing to change herself, and advocating for acceptance.
